Sushi starts with rice. Not fish.
We’re not sushi experts — we’re learning as we go.
But one thing we’ve already learned? If the rice isn’t right, nothing else matters.
So before we even try making sushi rolls, we wanted to understand the foundation.
What Makes Sushi Rice Different?
Sushi rice isn’t just regular rice.
It’s:
– Short grain rice
– Cooked carefully
– Seasoned with vinegar, sugar, and salt
The texture is what really matters — it needs to be sticky enough to hold together, but not mushy.
What We Learned
Here’s what stood out straight away:
– The type of rice matters more than we expected
– Washing the rice properly is important
– Getting the seasoning right takes practice
This isn’t something you perfect on the first try — and that’s fine.
What We’re Trying Next
Next step for us is actually making the rice ourselves and seeing how close we can get.
We’ll share what works… and what definitely doesn’t.
If you’re just starting out like us, focus on the rice first.
Everything else builds from there.
